The movie is based on Annie Proulx's short story Brokeback Mountain from Close Range, Wyoming Stories. A story in that collection, “Brokeback Mountain,” was adapted as an Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe Award-winning major motion picture released in 2005. In 1999 Proulx released Close Range: Wyoming Stories. Proulx, who now lives in my home state of Wyoming, wrote several collections of short stories: Close Range: Wyoming Stories, Bad Dirt: Wyoming Stories 2, and Fine Just the Way It Is: Wyoming Stories 3. Brokeback Mountain was originally published in The New Yorker in 1997 and appeared in Proulx's collection of short stories Close Range: Wyoming Stories. This story is also included in her second collection of stories, Close Range: Wyoming Stories (1999). Annie Proulx's short story Brokeback Mountain (published in her collection 'Close Range, Wyoming Stories'), transferred seamlessly to the big screen, proving the resilient nature of the short form. To win the PEN/Faulkner Award in Fiction; Close Range: Wyoming Stories, which included the novella, “Brokeback Mountain”; and, most recently, Fine Just the Way it Is, the third installment in her Wyoming Stories series. I recently started Annie Proulx's collection of short stories, Close Range: Wyoming Stories (which includes the story “Brokeback Mountain,” famous because Ang Lee adapted into a film). I followed The Muse's Tragedy with Annie Proulx's collection Close Range: Wyoming Stories (or, as my version has been retitled, Close Range: Brokeback Mountain and Other Stories). Since I enjoyed the movie so much, I thought I would read the original story. Lauren reads from Annie Proulx's "Brokeback Mountain," originally published in the October 13, 1997 New Yorker and later collected in Proulx's Close Range: Wyoming Stories (New York: Scribner, 1999. I think the best short story collection for you would be one that's thematically cohesive. A few lucky accidents brought Close Range into my hands. Before “Brokeback Mountain” was a critically acclaimed and controversial film from director Ang Lee, it was a small love story tucked in the pages of author Annie Proulx's collection, Close Range: Wyoming Stories. A book like this causes its reader to thank God, unironically and humbly, for allowing her to come across it. Close Range: Wyoming Stories is one of my favorite collections, and I hold even more affection for it than The Shipping News (which Proulx was awarded the Pulitzer and National Book Award). The movie's source is the final story in Annie Proulx's book Close Range: Wyoming Stories, a collection of narratives about difficult lives lived in difficult circumstances by people who mostly don't expect better. Accordingly, Proulx's trilogy of Wyoming stories, Close Range (1999), Bad Dirt (2004), and Fine Just the Way It Is (2008), are regarded as her finest work.
